Happy Sunday,

I think the mystics are some of the most interesting people who have ever lived. They are those who God has momentarily ripped apart the veil between Heaven and Earth. I'm a little jealous, but grateful nonetheless.

Julian of Norwich is one such mystic, and she writes about a vision she had of Christ speaking with her. This is what she wrote.

"Then our good Lord put a question to me: Are you well satisfied that I suffered for you? I said: Yes, good Lord, all my thanks to you; yes, good Lord, blessed may you be. Then Jesus, our good Lord, said: If you are satisfied, I am satisfied. It is a joy, a bliss, and endless delight to me that I ever suffered my Passion for you; and if I could suffer more, I should suffer more.

And in these words, “if I could suffer more, I would suffer more,” I saw truly that if He might die once for each man who shall be saved as He died once for all, love would never let Him rest until He had done it. And when He had done it, He would still think nothing of it out of love; for everything seems a trifle to Him in comparison with His love."

Pray the Divine Mercy Chaplet today and do so with the thought that Jesus loves you so much that He would die every day for you.

Creo que los místicos son algunas de las personas más interesantes que han existido. Son aquellos a quienes Dios les ha rasgado momentáneamente el velo entre el Cielo y la Tierra. Estoy un poco celoso, pero agradecido de todos modos.

Juliana de Norwich es una de esos místicos, y escribe sobre una visión que tuvo de Cristo hablándole. Esto es lo que escribió.

“Entonces nuestro buen Señor me hizo una pregunta: ¿Estás bien satisfecha de que sufrí por ti? Yo dije: Sí, buen Señor, todas mis gracias para ti; sí, buen Señor, bendito seas. Entonces Jesús, nuestro buen Señor, dijo: Si tú estás satisfecha, yo estoy satisfecho. Es un gozo, una dicha y un deleite sin fin para mí haber sufrido mi Pasión por ti; y si pudiera sufrir más, sufriría más.

Y en estas palabras, “si pudiera sufrir más, sufriría más”, vi verdaderamente que si Él pudiera morir una vez por cada hombre que haya de salvarse como murió una vez por todos, el amor jamás le dejaría descansar hasta que lo hubiera hecho. Y cuando lo hubiera hecho, aún no pensaría nada de ello por amor; pues todo le parece una pequeñez en comparación con su amor.”

Reza hoy la Coronilla de la Divina Misericordia y hazlo pensando que Jesús te ama tanto que moriría cada día por ti.

Happy Easter!

Christ is risen! Amen! Alleluia!

Only a few home videos have survived from my childhood, and for some reason, half of them are Easter egg hunts. Not my birth, not my baptism, but Easter egg hunts... Almost all of which involve me finding eggs, realizing they aren't the ones with cash inside, and then giving the eggs to my brother.

I pray you find more than a $5 bill in a plastic egg this Easter! I pray that it is the resurrected Christ you encounter alongside the holy women of Jerusalem. This Easter, 15 more people found Christ at our parish as they were baptized into the Catholic faith. Praise God! I pray they feel welcome and know the Church is now their home. They are part of the largest OCIA group in our little church's history, and a sign of a revival happening throughout the universal Church. As Chesterton once said, "Christianity has died many times and risen again; for it had a God who knew the way out of the grave.”

If this is your first time back to Mass in a long time or you are from another faith tradition and have experienced the power of God here, I invite you, like the disciples, to come and see. We are happy you are here, and we pray you will join us every Sunday to celebrate Jesus' Resurrection.

Finally, to all the Saint Mary's faithful, may you know the joy of Christ's Resurrection this day, and may you share that joy with all you meet.

¡Feliz Pascua!

¡Cristo ha resucitado! ¡Amén! ¡Aleluya!

Solo unos pocos videos caseros han sobrevivido de mi infancia y, por alguna razón, la mitad de ellos son búsquedas de huevos de Pascua. No mi nacimiento, no mi bautismo, sino búsquedas de huevos de Pascua… Casi todas implican que yo encuentre huevos, me dé cuenta de que no son los que tienen dinero dentro y luego se los entregue a mi hermano.

¡Ruego que encuentres más que un billete de 5 dólares en un huevo de plástico esta Pascua! Ruego que sea a Cristo resucitado a quien encuentres junto a las santas mujeres de Jerusalén. Esta Pascua, 15 personas más encontraron a Cristo en nuestra parroquia al ser bautizadas en la fe Católica. ¡Alabado sea Dios! Ruego que se sientan bienvenidas y sepan que la Iglesia es ahora su hogar. Son parte del grupo de OCIA más numeroso en la historia de nuestra pequeña iglesia y un signo de un avivamiento que sucede en toda la Iglesia universal. Como dijo una vez Chesterton, “El cristianismo ha muerto muchas veces y ha resucitado de nuevo; porque tenía un Dios que conocía el camino para salir de la tumba”.

Si esta es tu primera vez de regreso a la Misa en mucho tiempo o vienes de otra tradición de fe y has experimentado aquí el poder de Dios, te invito, como a los discípulos, a venir y ver. Estamos felices de que estés aquí, y oramos para que te unas a nosotros cada domingo para celebrar la Resurrección de Jesús.

Happy Sunday,

This week, we enter into the high point of the drama of human history. The decisive moment where the worst of human sinfulness will finally meet the best of godly virtue.

What line or moment strikes you on Palm Sunday? Is it, "My God, my God, why have you forsaken me?" or maybe "Crucify him!" Perhaps it is "Amen, I say to you, one of you will betray me," or "Father, if it is possible, let this cup pass from me." Maybe you notice Mary's subtle presence or the little donkey that has no idea what is going on.

The words of scripture that strike us are one of the ways that God speaks to us. Pay attention! Do not let this week pass you by. “The tragedy of the passion brings to fulfillment our own life and the whole of human history. We can’t let Holy Week be just a kind of commemoration. It means contemplating the mystery of Jesus Christ as something which continues to work in our souls.”

Come and see, Jesus says to the first disciples. Come and see, He says to us now as we enter into Holy Week.

Esta semana entramos en el punto culminante del drama de la historia humana. El momento decisivo en el que lo peor de la pecaminosidad humana se encontrará finalmente con lo mejor de la virtud divina. ¿Qué frase o momento te impacta en el Domingo de Ramos? Es, "Dios mío, Dios mío, ¿por qué me has abandonado?" o tal vez "¡Crucifícale!" Quizás sea "En verdad os digo que uno de vosotros me va a entregar," o "Padre, si es posible, que pase de mí este cáliz." Tal vez notas la sutil presencia de María o el pequeño burro que no tiene idea de lo que está pasando.

Las palabras de la Escritura que nos impactan son una de las formas en que Dios nos habla. ¡Presta atención! No dejes que esta semana pase desapercibida.

“La tragedia de la pasión lleva nuestra propia vida y toda la historia humana a la plenitud nuestra. No podemos dejar que la Semana Santa sea solo una especie de conmemoración. Significa contemplar el misterio de Jesucristo como algo que sigue obrando en nuestras almas.”

Ven y mira, dice Jesús a los primeros discípulos. Ven y mira, nos dice a nosotros ahora que entramos en la Semana Santa.

Happy Sunday,

We are five weeks into Lent, which means that by this point, things are either going really well or the train has come off the proverbial tracks. Praise God if your Lent is going exceedingly well! If not, our readings this week have something to offer you. God can bring life even to old, dry bones!

My challenge for you this week is to read the entire Gospel that we will hear at Mass this Sunday. Remember, the Gospels are the historical accounts of this man, Jesus. Read it that way. As if you are reading a biography about the most interesting man who ever lived, and this is one of his greatest moments. Let God bring new life to you this Lent through His words in the Gospel.

Llevamos cinco semanas de Cuaresma, lo que significa que a estas alturas, las cosas van muy bien o el tren se ha salido de los rieles. ¡Alabado sea Dios si tu Cuaresma va excepcionalmente bien! Si no es así, nuestras lecturas de esta semana tienen algo que ofrecerte. ¡Dios puede dar vida incluso a huesos viejos y secos!

Mi desafío para ti esta semana es leer el Evangelio completo que escucharemos en Misa este domingo. Recuerda, los Evangelios son los relatos históricos de este hombre, Jesús. Léelo de esa manera. Como si estuvieras leyendo una biografía sobre el hombre más interesante que jamás haya vivido, y este es uno de sus momentos más grandes. Permite que Dios te traiga nueva vida en esta Cuaresma a través de Sus palabras en el Evangelio.

Happy Sunday,

A few years ago, I was at a family's house, and the mom, dad, and I were having a drink on the back porch while their kids played out back. The boys had discovered that if you leave the hose on, it turns the clay into mud, and mud is fun! When suppertime came, the mom called them in, and they arrived covered in Georgia red clay. They didn't mind one bit and decided that Mom, Dad, and Fr. Paul all needed hugs.

"Jesus spat on the ground and made clay with the saliva, and smeared the clay on his eyes,

and said to him, “Go wash in the Pool of Siloam” — which means Sent. So he went and washed, and came back able to see."

Jesus, in his wonderful humanity, is like a boy in the mud. The only difference is that when he plays in the mud, people are healed, and the blind can see. And from time to time God has even been known to make men out of the mud.

May our eyes be opened this Lent, and may we see the one who has opened them.

Hace unos años, estaba en la casa de una familia, y la mamá, el papá y yo estábamos tomando una copa en el porche trasero mientras sus hijos jugaban afuera. Los niños habían descubierto que si dejas la manguera encendida, convierte la arcilla en barro, ¡y el barro es divertido! Cuando llegó la hora de cenar, la mamá los llamó, y llegaron cubiertos de arcilla roja de Georgia. A ellos no les importó en absoluto y decidieron que Mamá, Papá y el P. Paul necesitaban abrazos.

"Jesús escupió en el suelo, hizo barro con la saliva, se lo untó en los ojos, y le dijo: “Ve a lavarte en la piscina de Siloé” — que significa Enviado. El ciego fue, se lavó y volvió viendo."

Jesús, en su maravillosa humanidad, es como un niño en el barro. La única diferencia es que cuando juega en el barro, la gente es sanada y los ciegos pueden ver. Y de vez en cuando, Dios incluso ha sido conocido por hacer hombres del barro.

Que nuestros ojos se abran esta Cuaresma, y que veamos a Aquel que los ha abierto.

Happy Sunday,

I have always wondered if Jesus ever actually got a cup of water after his encounter with the woman at the well. We hear in the Gospel that Jesus asks a Samaritan woman for a cup of water and eventually reveals to her that he is the Messiah who has come to give her the water of eternal life. Then she leaves and becomes the first great evangelist in the Gospels, telling the whole city about Jesus.

But does Jesus actually get a glass of cold water after all his trouble?!! The answer is probably no, because "man does not live by bread alone." It was her soul that he came to the well to find, and it was her soul that he was thirsting for.

Reflecting on Jesus’ words from the cross, Mother Teresa said, “At this most difficult time, He proclaimed, ‘I thirst.’ And people thought He was thirsty in an ordinary way, and they gave Him vinegar straight away; but it was not for that thirst; it was for our life, our affection, that intimate attachment to him, and that sharing of His passion. He used, ‘I thirst,’ instead of ‘Give Me your love’… ‘I thirst.’ Let us hear Him saying it to me and saying it to you."

Siempre me he preguntado si Jesús realmente consiguió un vaso de agua después de su encuentro con la mujer en el pozo. Escuchamos en el Evangelio que Jesús le pide a una mujer samaritana un vaso de agua y finalmente le revela que Él es el Mesías que ha venido a darle el agua de la vida eterna. Luego ella se va y se convierte en la primera gran evangelizadora en los Evangelios, contándole a toda la ciudad acerca de Jesús.

Pero, ¿Jesús realmente consigue un vaso de agua fría después de todas sus dificultades?!! La respuesta probablemente es no, porque "no solo de pan vive el hombre". Fue su alma la que Él vino a buscar al pozo, y era por su alma por la que Él tenía sed.

Reflexionando sobre las palabras de Jesús desde la cruz, la Madre Teresa dijo: “En este momento tan difícil, Él proclamó: ‘Tengo sed’. Y la gente pensó que tenía sed de una manera ordinaria, y le dieron vinagre enseguida; pero no era por esa sed; era por nuestra vida, nuestro afecto, ese apego íntimo a Él, y esa participación en Su pasión. Él usó, ‘Tengo sed’, en lugar de ‘Denme su amor’… ‘Tengo sed’. Escuchémoslo decirlo a mí y decirlo a ti.”

Mary's last words in scripture are, "Do whatever He tells you," and God the Father says, "This is my beloved Son, with whom I am well pleased; listen to him."

Case closed! Listen to Jesus! If you do, then you will find yourself being transfigured and God's divine light shining through you.

I pray God is blessing you this Lenten season. Don't give up!

Happy Sunday,

As I was sitting at the buffet table on vacation last week, I had a sudden realization. I need Lent! My heart and soul need this season. I used to think of Lent as a sad and depressing season. A time when I couldn't eat the food that I wanted, when I had to say more prayers, and when everything looked purple. Now, it looks to me like freedom. Like water in the desert of ordinary life.

Pope Benedict famously said, "The world offers you comfort. But you were not made for comfort. You were made for greatness!"

Stop seeking comfort! Put down the ice cream bowl and pick up the Word of God! That was really more for me than you, but maybe you also need to hear it.

Into the desert we go with Christ. Let us turn away from comfort, media, distraction, vanity, self-centeredness, sin, and complacency. And let us instead turn for a time toward renewal, humility, honor, sacrifice, virtue, and the Passion of Jesus Christ.

Mientras estaba sentado en la mesa del buffet durante las vacaciones la semana pasada, de repente me di cuenta de algo. ¡Necesito Cuaresma! Mi corazón y mi alma necesitan esta temporada. Solía pensar en la Cuaresma como una temporada triste y deprimente. Un tiempo en el que no podía comer lo que quería, en el que tenía que decir más oraciones, y en el que todo se veía morado. Ahora, me parece libertad. Como agua en el desierto de la vida ordinaria.

El Papa Benedicto dijo famosamente: "El mundo te ofrece comodidad. Pero no fuiste hecho para la comodidad. ¡Fuiste hecho para la grandeza!"

¡Deja de buscar comodidad! ¡Deja el tazón de helado y toma la Palabra de Dios! Eso fue más para mí que para ti, pero tal vez tú también necesitas escucharlo.

Al desierto vamos con Cristo. Alejémonos por un tiempo de la comodidad, los medios de comunicación, la distracción, la vanidad, el egocentrismo, el pecado y la complacencia. Y volvamos en su lugar hacia la renovación, la humildad, el honor, el sacrificio, la virtud y la Pasión de Jesucristo.

Happy Sunday,

There have been many inventions in the last 50 years that have made life more miserable. iPhone, reality TV, TikTok, etc. However, there is one that has undeniably made the world a better place—sea salt dark chocolate. Praise the Lord for this nuance in the dessert world! Praise the Lord who loved salt so much that he complimented his disciples with it.

Jesus said to his disciples: "You are the salt of the earth!" The earth is the proverbial chocolate, and you are the proverbial sea salt. You are going to turn the natural into the supernatural. “People don’t enjoy salt. They enjoy what is salted. We are the salt of the earth. We do not exist for ourselves.”

Praise God to the Christians in your life who are the salt of the earth. These are the ones who fill you with joy, gratitude, hope, and encouragement. May you be the salt of your families, relationships, and our church. Know of my prayers for you while I am away this Sunday and next on vacation.

Ha habido muchas invenciones en los últimos 50 años que han hecho la vida más miserable: el iPhone, la televisión de reality, TikTok, etc. Sin embargo, hay una que indudablemente ha hecho del mundo un lugar mejor: el chocolate oscuro con sal de mar. ¡Alabado sea el Señor por este matiz en el mundo de los postres! ¡Alabado sea el Señor que amó tanto la sal que la usó para elogiar a sus discípulos!

Jesús dijo a sus discípulos: «¡Ustedes son la sal de la tierra!». La tierra es el chocolate proverbial, y ustedes son la sal de mar proverbial. Van a transformar lo natural en lo sobrenatural. “A la gente no le gusta la sal; le gusta lo que está sazonado. Somos la sal de la tierra. No existimos para nosotros mismos”.

Alabemos a Dios por los cristianos en nuestras vidas que son la sal de la tierra. Son aquellos que nos llenan de alegría, gratitud, esperanza y ánimo. Que ustedes sean la sal de sus familias, relaciones y de nuestra Iglesia. Sepan que los tengo presentes en mis oraciones mientras estoy fuera este domingo y el próximo de vacaciones.

Happy Sunday,

Firstly, happy birthday to my mother, who turns 40 this year (so she says...)! Somehow, she has a son who is only a few years older than her! It's a miracle that we celebrate every year in the Porter home. I'm very grateful for every year that I've spent with her.

This Sunday, we have our Archdiocesan Annual Appeal. This appeal each year goes toward supporting the various ministries of the archdiocese, most importantly the men in formation for the priesthood. We are blessed to have two men at our parish who are studying for the priesthood, Ozzy and Didier. This appeal weekend allows them to focus full-time on priestly formation without having to worry about debt. I am personally grateful to the Archdiocese for allowing me to have the opportunity as well.

The goal for each parish is based on its size and offertory income from two years ago. Because of our tremendous growth these last few years, our goal has increased by nearly 40%. Every dollar raised over our intended goal will go back to the parish. I pray that you will support our diocese and parish as we attempt to meet our goal.

¡Feliz domingo!

En primer lugar, ¡feliz cumpleaños a mi madre, que cumple 40 años este año (¡según ella…!)! De alguna manera, tiene un hijo que es solo unos pocos años mayor que ella. ¡Es un milagro que celebramos cada año en la casa de los Porter! Estoy muy agradecido por cada año que he pasado con ella.

Este domingo celebramos nuestra Campaña Anual Arquidiocesana. Esta campaña cada año se destina a apoyar los diversos ministerios de la arquidiócesis, especialmente a los hombres en formación para el sacerdocio. Tenemos la bendición de contar en nuestra parroquia con dos hombres que están estudiando para el sacerdocio, Ozzy y Didier. Este fin de semana de la campaña les permite dedicarse de tiempo completo a su formación sacerdotal sin tener que preocuparse por deudas. Personalmente, también estoy muy agradecido a la Arquidiócesis por brindarme esa oportunidad.

La meta para cada parroquia se basa en su tamaño y en los ingresos de la colecta de hace dos años. Debido a nuestro gran crecimiento en los últimos años, nuestra meta ha aumentado casi un 40%. Cada dólar recaudado por encima de nuestra meta asignada regresará a la parroquia. Rezo para que apoyen a nuestra diócesis y a nuestra parroquia mientras buscamos alcanzar esta meta.

Happy Sunday,

It is popular to say things like, "She's a Catholic, and I'm a Christian," or "They go to the Catholic Church, we are at a Christian church." There is usually nothing mean meant by it, but it's a bad habit that we need to get out of.

To say you are a Catholic means that you are a part of the family of the first Christians. You are part of a family that worked hard for 2000 years to get to you. There were generations of Christians who fought and worked to make sure the faith made it to Rome, Georgia. They prayed and fasted that someday you would be kneeling in a pew in front of the same Jesus they loved.

It all started with this line from the Gospel today. “Come after me, and I will make you fishers of men.” Jesus' plan from the beginning was to teach us how to make disciples. So the million-dollar question I want to ask you this week to pray with is, "How are you doing with that?" and "Will the next generation know the same Christ I know?"

Es común decir cosas como: "Ella es católica y yo soy cristiano" o "Ellos van a la iglesia católica, nosotros estamos en una iglesia cristiana". No suele haber mala intención, pero es un mal hábito del que debemos desprendernos.

Decir que eres católico significa que formas parte de la familia de los primeros cristianos. Formas parte de una familia que trabajó arduamente durante 2000 años para llegar a ti. Hubo generaciones de cristianos que lucharon y trabajaron para asegurar que la fe llegara a Rome, Georgia. Oraron y ayunaron para que algún día estuvieras arrodillado en una banca frente al mismo Jesús que ellos amaban.

Todo comenzó con esta frase del Evangelio de hoy: « Venid en pos de mí, y os haré pescadores de hombres ». El plan de Jesús desde el principio fue enseñarnos a hacer discípulos. Así que la pregunta clave que quiero hacerles esta semana para orar es: "¿Cómo vas con eso?" y "¿Conocerá la próxima generación al mismo Cristo que yo conozco?".

Happy Sunday,

Do you remember the first time someone called you “daughter” or “son”? Most parents remember the first time they are called “mom” or “dad,” but long before that, they themselves belonged to someone.

Before Jesus performs his first miracle, before he chooses his first twelve apostles, and before he preaches a single word, he goes to the Jordan to be baptized by John—in the same place where Elijah was taken into heaven by a fiery chariot and where Israel crossed into the Promised Land.

And when he comes up from the water, we do not hear the Father say, “Go and destroy the devil,” or “Begin healing and preaching,” but only, “You are my beloved Son; with you I am well pleased.”

This is where Christ’s mission begins. This is where we must begin: as beloved sons and daughters of God our Father. Only once we are living in this identity will our mission, works, and efforts have any real spiritual value.

¿Recuerdas la primera vez que alguien te llamó "hija" o "hijo"? La mayoría de los padres recuerdan la primera vez que los llamaron "mamá" o "papá", pero mucho antes, ellos mismos pertenecían a alguien.

Antes de realizar su primer milagro, antes de elegir a sus primeros doce apóstoles y antes de predicar una sola palabra, Jesús va al Jordán para ser bautizado por Juan, en el mismo lugar donde Elías fue llevado al cielo en un carro de fuego y donde Israel cruzó a la Tierra Prometida.

Y cuando sale del agua, no oímos al Padre decir: «Ve y destruye al diablo», ni «Comienza a sanar y a predicar», sino solamente: «Tú eres mi Hijo amado; en ti me complazco».

Happy Epiphany!

Our New Year and our Magi have both arrived! Today is the Feast of the Epiphany of the Lord, one of the oldest of all Christian feasts. It is also known as Three Kings’ Day. It commemorates the visit of the Magi to the Christ Child. There is a centuries-old tradition of marking our doorways with blessed chalk as a visible way of dedicating our homes and the New Year to God. We will be handing out blessed chalk after each Mass for all who wish to partake in this tradition. Either way, I pray God blesses you and your families abundantly this year.

¡Nuestro Año Nuevo y nuestros Magos ya han llegado! Hoy celebramos la Fiesta de la Epifanía del Señor, una de las más antiguas de todas las fiestas cristianas. También es conocida como el Día de los Reyes Magos. Conmemora la visita de los Magos al Niño Jesús. Existe una tradición de siglos de antigüedad de marcar las puertas de nuestros hogares con tiza bendecida como una forma visible de dedicar nuestros hogares y el Año Nuevo a Dios. Estaremos entregando tiza bendecida después de cada Misa para todos los que deseen participar en esta tradición. De cualquier manera, ruego que Dios los bendiga abundantemente a ustedes y a sus familias durante este año.

Happy Advent,

Week one of Advent is on Hope. Hope because the king "is on the move- perhaps has already landed." The time for fear, worry, anxiety, and despair has ended. Open up the doors of your soul and breathe the air of hope, peace, joy, and love. These are what Christ has come to bring us.

Feliz Adviento,

La primera semana de Adviento se centra en la Esperanza. Esperanza porque el Rey “está en camino, quizás ya ha llegado”. El tiempo del miedo, la preocupación, la ansiedad y la desesperación ha terminado. Abre las puertas de tu alma y respira el aire de esperanza, paz, alegría y amor. Esto es lo que Cristo ha venido a traernos.

Happy Solemnity of Christ the King!

Next Sunday, Advent officially begins, and Bishop Joel is coming to bless the new chapel of Saint Joseph. This is going to be an enormous gift for our community. We will have the opportunity to pray at the church with the Blessed Sacrament 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. This chapel will become the engine that will power all the spiritual growth of our parish.

Do not let this Advent pass you by. My recommendation is that you sign up for a holy hour once a week in our new chapel and that you join me for the Advent Pray25 challenge on the Hallow App.

Happy Sunday,

One of my favorite movie scenes is from The Sandlot. It shows a neighborhood gathered together for a Fourth of July party, and their kids are playing baseball underneath the fireworks lights as Ray Charles sings "America the Beautiful." It's an image of a country that I love, and it feels so patriotic. Yet, today, there is great debate over what it means to be a "patriot." On this point, the Church has much to say.

"Catholic Church teaching is that patriotism is not an option; it’s a duty. Pope Leo XIII writing in 1890 indicated, “To love both countries, that of earth below and that of heaven above … is the essential duty of Christians." Patriotism can be seen as a form of familial love. This charity takes the form of being a good citizen, loving one’s neighbors. It informs our obligation to work for the common good and to preserve certain freedoms and fundamental human rights. On the contrary, to reject patriotism and love of one’s country is a violation of the fourth commandment and a serious offense to God. Catholics must love their homeland and this charity must manifest itself in efforts to work peacefully toward the good of all citizens...Saint Thomas Aquinas says, Patriotism, as a proper love and honor toward one’s country is a part of the virtue of piety; therefore, Patriotism is a virtue. As Aristotle taught, virtue is the golden mean. The virtue of Patriotism is found in the middle of two extremes: nationalism, and an ungratefulness for the blessings of one’s country. The former can lead to the conquest over other nations’ rights and the latter to a disordered violence against other citizens."

The famous "Iwo Jima" photo on the bulletin cover is a good image of what it means to be a patriotic Catholic. To be sent out by Jesus like a soldier into battle. Not alone but side by side with our sisters and brothers for the glory of God, family, and country. In that order.

Happy Sunday,

Last weekend we celebrated the Feast of Corpus Christi and over 60 first Communions. I want to say thank you to all of those who helped make it such a beautiful day for our families.

T.S. Eliot wrote, “Dante and Shakespeare divide the world between them. There is no third.” The same might be said of Saints Peter and Paul. The great apostles to the Jews and the Gentiles (aka the whole world!).

“Heavenly mountains, glittering heights of the new Sion!” These are the gates of our true country, the two lights of the immense world.

There Paul’s voice is heard like thunder;

there Peter withholds or hurls the bolt .

The former opens the hearts of men, the latter opens Heaven. Peter is the foundation-stone, Paul the architect of the temple where stands the Altar, by which God is propitiated.

Both together, form a single fountain which, pours out its healing and refreshing waters.”

These are the greatest of the martyrs of Rome. These are our saints. Let us turn to them today for inspiration, example, and prayers.

We are not a museum or a library! We don't come here to hear stories about a nice teacher who lived 2000 years ago. We are meant to become living "Christs" here and now. That is why we are confirmed with holy oils and sent back into the world at the end of every Mass.

Happy Ascension Sunday!

“When you went to bed last night Jesus was at work subduing his enemies. While you slept he was continuing to rule over the world. He was still at it when you woke up this morning and even now as you read this. That is the outrageous claim of the Ascension.”

I hope you had a restful holiday weekend. Every Memorial Day, a friend of mine and I do a "Murph". The Murph workout is a CrossFit tribute to Navy Lieutenant Michael Murphy, who died in Afghanistan in 2005 and received the Medal of Honor for his heroism. It is a challenging exercise routine that consists of: a 1-mile run, 100 pull-ups, 200 push-ups, 300 squats, and a final 1-mile run. All while wearing a 20lb weighted vest. I am officially at the point in life where if I wore that vest during this workout, I would probably die! However, it is a good reminder that there are men and women who have fought for the freedom that we enjoy.

Jesus also fights for us and our freedom. He is not lounging about Heaven eating grapes and waiting for us to show up. He is hard at work fighting for our hearts, minds, and souls. Today, we celebrate that our Commander is on the throne and that we are not alone.

¡Feliz Domingo de la Ascensión!

“Cuando te acostaste anoche, Jesús estaba trabajando para someter a sus enemigos. Mientras dormías, él seguía gobernando el mundo. Seguía haciéndolo cuando te despertaste esta mañana e incluso ahora, mientras lees esto. Esa es la escandalosa afirmación de la Ascensión.”

Espero que hayas tenido un fin de semana festivo tranquilo. Cada Día de los Caídos, un amigo y yo hacemos un "Murph". El entrenamiento Murph es un homenaje de CrossFit al teniente de la Marina Michael Murphy, quien murió en Afganistán en 2005 y recibió la Medalla de Honor por su heroísmo. Es una rutina de ejercicios desafiante que consiste en: una carrera de 1.6 km, 100 dominadas, 200 flexiones, 300 sentadillas y una carrera final de 1.6 km. Todo esto con un chaleco lastrado de 9 kg. ¡He llegado oficialmente al punto de mi vida en que si usara ese chaleco durante este entrenamiento, probablemente moriría! Sin embargo, es un buen recordatorio de que hay hombres y mujeres que han luchado por la libertad que disfrutamos.

Jesús también lucha por nosotros y por nuestra libertad. No se queda holgazaneando en el Cielo comiendo uvas y esperando a que aparezcamos. Trabaja arduamente para defender nuestros corazones, mentes y almas. Hoy celebramos que nuestro Comandante está en el trono y que no estamos solos.
