Letter to the Romans
Happy Sunday,
One of my favorite movie scenes is from The Sandlot. It shows a neighborhood gathered together for a Fourth of July party, and their kids are playing baseball underneath the fireworks lights as Ray Charles sings "America the Beautiful." It's an image of a country that I love, and it feels so patriotic. Yet, today, there is great debate over what it means to be a "patriot." On this point, the Church has much to say.
"Catholic Church teaching is that patriotism is not an option; it’s a duty. Pope Leo XIII writing in 1890 indicated, “To love both countries, that of earth below and that of heaven above … is the essential duty of Christians." Patriotism can be seen as a form of familial love. This charity takes the form of being a good citizen, loving one’s neighbors. It informs our obligation to work for the common good and to preserve certain freedoms and fundamental human rights. On the contrary, to reject patriotism and love of one’s country is a violation of the fourth commandment and a serious offense to God. Catholics must love their homeland and this charity must manifest itself in efforts to work peacefully toward the good of all citizens...Saint Thomas Aquinas says, Patriotism, as a proper love and honor toward one’s country is a part of the virtue of piety; therefore, Patriotism is a virtue. As Aristotle taught, virtue is the golden mean. The virtue of Patriotism is found in the middle of two extremes: nationalism, and an ungratefulness for the blessings of one’s country. The former can lead to the conquest over other nations’ rights and the latter to a disordered violence against other citizens."
The famous "Iwo Jima" photo on the bulletin cover is a good image of what it means to be a patriotic Catholic. To be sent out by Jesus like a soldier into battle. Not alone but side by side with our sisters and brothers for the glory of God, family, and country. In that order.

Una de mis escenas favoritas de películas es de The Sandlot. Muestra a un vecindario reunido para una fiesta del 4 de Julio, y sus hijos juegan béisbol bajo los fuegos artificiales mientras Ray Charles canta "America the Beautiful". Es la imagen de un país que amo, y me transmite mucho patriotismo. Sin embargo, hoy en día existe un gran debate sobre qué significa ser "patriota". En este punto, la Iglesia tiene mucho que decir.
La enseñanza de la Iglesia Católica es que el patriotismo no es una opción, sino un deber. El Papa León XIII, en un escrito de 1890, indicó: «Amar a ambas patrias, la terrenal y la celestial… es el deber esencial de los cristianos». El patriotismo puede considerarse una forma de amor familiar. Esta caridad se manifiesta en ser un buen ciudadano y amar al prójimo. Informa nuestra obligación de trabajar por el bien común y preservar ciertas libertades y derechos humanos fundamentales. Por el contrario, rechazar el patriotismo y el amor a la patria es una violación del cuarto mandamiento y una grave ofensa a Dios. Los católicos deben amar a su patria, y esta caridad debe manifestarse en esfuerzos por trabajar pacíficamente por el bien de todos los ciudadanos... Santo Tomás de Aquino afirma que el patriotismo, como amor y honor adecuados hacia la patria, forma parte de la virtud de la piedad; por lo tanto, el patriotismo es una virtud. Como enseñó Aristóteles, la virtud es el justo medio. La virtud del patriotismo se encuentra en medio de dos extremos: el nacionalismo y la ingratitud hacia las bendiciones del propio país.El primero puede llevar a la conquista de los derechos de otras naciones, y el segundo a la violencia desordenada contra otros ciudadanos.
La famosa foto de "Iwo Jima" en la portada del boletín ilustra bien lo que significa ser un católico patriota: ser enviado por Jesús como un soldado a la batalla. No solo, sino junto a nuestros hermanos y hermanas para la gloria de Dios, la familia y la patria. En ese orden.
