Letter to the Romans

Happy Father's Day! It is hard to discern sometimes the tone of a text. When she said "good night!" did she mean "go away!" or did she mean "sweet dreams"? When he said "okay," was it because he was annoyed at me, or was he just being succinct? That is oftentimes the case in the Gospel as well. I think that sometimes we miss the subtle grin or warm demeanor of Jesus as he speaks the words of the Father. "Are not two sparrows sold for a small coin? Yet not one of them falls to the ground without your Father's knowledge. Even all the hairs of your head are counted. So do not be afraid; you are worth more than many sparrows." The disciples are worried about dying, and Jesus says, "Don't worry, boys, God takes care of even the birds!" Is it not like a good father to settle our worries sometimes with a little humor? He knows that worrying about it will not help them, so he wants to bring peace to their hearts. I hope that your earthly father has brought peace to your heart throughout your life, but even if he hasn't, you have a Father in heaven who is longing to do so. Cuando dijo "¡buenas noches!", ¿quiso decir "¡vete!" o "dulces sueños"? Cuando dijo "de acuerdo", ¿fue porque estaba molesto conmigo o simplemente estaba siendo breve? Eso suele ocurrir también en los Evangelios. Creo que a veces pasamos por alto la sutil sonrisa o la cálida actitud de Jesús al pronunciar las palabras del Padre. ¿Acaso no se venden dos gorriones por una moneda pequeña? Sin embargo, ni uno solo de ellos cae al suelo sin que tu Padre lo sepa. Incluso todos los cabellos de tu cabeza están contados. Así que no temas; tú vales mucho más que muchos gorriones. Los discípulos están preocupados por la muerte, y Jesús les dice: «¡No se preocupen, muchachos! ¡Dios cuida hasta de los pájaros!». ¿Acaso no es propio de un buen padre calmar nuestras preocupaciones con un poco de humor? Él sabe que preocuparse no les ayudará, así que quiere traer paz a sus corazones. Espero que tu padre terrenal te haya brindado paz a lo largo de tu vida, pero incluso si no lo ha hecho, tienes un Padre celestial que anhela hacerlo. Happy Sunday, I was reading a study recently about how babies can, at times, adapt their heart rate to match the rhythmic shift of their mother's breathing and heartbeat, creating a temporary state of synchronization. The result of these two hearts beating in unison is a calm baby and a happy mother. Ahead of the 250th anniversary of the signing of the Declaration of Independence, the Bishops of the United States have consecrated the country to the Sacred Heart of Jesus. What does that mean? It means that we are trying to sync the beat of our own hearts with that of the Sacred Heart of Jesus. So that our families, country, and lives might be lived in unison with the love of God. The result? Peace and happiness. "Lord Jesus, let my heart never rest until it finds You, who are its center, its love, and its happiness...Place my weak heart in your own divine heart, continually under your protection and guidance, so that I may persevere in doing good and in fleeing evil until my last breath. Paul JMJ ***** Feliz domingo, Hace poco leí un estudio sobre cómo los bebés pueden, en ocasiones, adaptar su ritmo cardíaco al ritmo de la respiración y los latidos del corazón de su madre, creando una sincronización temporal. El resultado de estos dos corazones latiendo al unísono es un bebé tranquilo y una madre feliz. En vísperas del 250 aniversario de la firma de la Declaración de Independencia, los obispos de Estados Unidos consagraron el país al Sagrado Corazón de Jesús. ¿Qué significa esto? Significa que buscamos armonizar nuestros corazones con el Sagrado Corazón de Jesús, para que nuestras familias, nuestro país y nuestras vidas se vivan en comunión con el amor de Dios. ¿El resultado? Paz y felicidad.  Señor Jesús, que mi corazón nunca descanse hasta que te encuentre a Ti, que eres su centro, su amor y su felicidad... Happy Sunday, “When the bee has gathered the dew of heaven and the earth’s sweetest nectar from the flowers, it turns it into honey, then hastens to its hive. In the same way, the priest, having taken from the altar the Son of God (who is as the dew from heaven, and true son of Mary, flower of our humanity), gives him to you as delicious food.” This past weekend, the Archbishop ordained 4 more men to the priesthood in the Archdiocese of Atlanta. Once again, we have men who have given up wives, families, and careers so that they can bring us the Body and Blood of Jesus Christ. Pray for them as they begin this journey, and pray that God may increase your love for the Eucharist. Lastly, consider becoming an adoration guardian. It only costs you one hour a week, and your prayer life will never be the same. God Love You, Fr. Así también, el sacerdote, tomando del altar al Hijo de Dios (quien como el rocío del cielo, y verdadero hijo de María, flor de nuestra humanidad), lo ofrece a ustedes como alimento delicioso.» El pasado fin de semana, el Arzobispo ordenó a cuatro hombres más al sacerdocio en la Arquidiócesis de Atlanta. Una vez más, tenemos hombres que han renunciado a sus esposas, familias y carreras para traernos el Cuerpo y la Sangre de Jesucristo. Oren por ellos al comenzar este camino y pidan a Dios que aumente su amor por la Eucaristía. Por último, considera la posibilidad de convertirte en guardián de la adoración eucarística. Happy Trinity Sunday! Congratulations to all our graduates! Those of you moving on to college and heading into the workforce will be missed. Please know that St. Mary's is always a place where you can come back to and be welcomed home. I also want to congratulate one of our summer seminarians, Bryan Roberts on his ordination to the diaconate. This past weekend he laid down his life for Christ and next year he will be ordained a priest. We will make sure to bring him back soon to serve at Mass. I pray this Sunday you feel the love of Holy Trinity. That you know the protection of the Father, the mercy of the Son, and the power of the Holy Spirit. God Love You, Fr. Happy Pentecost! This past weekend, we said goodbye to our seminarian Didier as he moves on to the next part of his formation as a hospital chaplain this summer. We were very blessed to have him here with us this year, and I ask that you keep him in your prayers as he prepares to be ordained a deacon in a year and a priest the year after. I also want to thank all of those who donated towards his farewell gift. I have asked that he remember the people of Saint Mary's in prayer every time he uses it. Thank you as well to the folks at Rhino who helped clear out and flatten the lot beside the church. It is now available for parking whenever needed. If you're coming to the church on Sundays for something other than Mass, please park there to help us with traffic. It is by the Holy Spirit and the Holy Spirit alone that our church is growing. Let us pray this ancient prayer of the Church and beg the Spirit for a new Pentecost in the city of Rome and within the people of Saint Mary's. Come, Holy Spirit, fill the hearts of your faithful. El pasado fin de semana nos despedimos de nuestro seminarista Didier, quien este verano inicia la siguiente etapa de su formación como capellán de hospital. Nos sentimos muy afortunados de haberlo tenido con nosotros este año, y les pido que lo tengan presente en sus oraciones mientras se prepara para ser ordenado diácono dentro de un año y sacerdote al siguiente. También quiero agradecer a todos los que contribuyeron a su regalo de despedida. Le he pedido que recuerde a la comunidad de Saint Mary's en sus oraciones cada vez que lo use. También queremos agradecer a la gente de Rhino que ayudó a limpiar y nivelar el terreno junto a la iglesia. Ahora está disponible para estacionar cuando sea necesario. Si vienen a la iglesia los domingos por algún motivo que no sea la misa, por favor, estacionen allí para ayudarnos a descongestionar el tráfico. Es por el Espíritu Santo, y solo por el Espíritu Santo, que nuestra iglesia crece. Recemos esta antigua oración de la Iglesia e imploremos al Espíritu un nuevo Pentecostés en la ciudad de Rome y entre los feligreses de Santa María. Happy Sunday, Immediately following First Communion last Sunday, I asked the kids how it went. One of them responded, "Father Paul, I'm never drinking the Blood of Christ again, it tasted like alcohol!" To which I replied, "How do you know what alcohol tastes like?" Pray that they stay close to Jesus in the Eucharist the rest of their lives.  Alongside receiving the Body and Blood of Christ every Sunday, we also proclaim that Jesus, "ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of the Father..." Don't let that line pass you by! That means that Jesus, "controls all things for the Church, and therefore you can face the world with peace in your heart . . . he’s at the right hand of God as the executive director of history, directing everything for the benefit of the Church. Happy Mother's Day! I pray all of the moms at our parish are feeling very loved today and that your children are spoiling you. Let's be honest, that probably means you're still doing most of the work, but I hope they are at least trying! I would especially like to wish my sister-in-law a happy Mother's Day after giving birth to another girl this past week and once again making me the greatest uncle in the world. Baby Maia Evelyn Margaret Porter is beautiful and healthy. Praise God! Jesus says to us, "I will not leave you orphans," in reference to the Holy Spirit whom He will send upon the Church, but I think it is just as much a reference to the gift of Mary as our spiritual mother. Jesus will say, a few chapters later, from the Cross, to Saint John and to the whole Church, “Here is your mother. Mother Teresa once said, "If you ever feel distressed during your day, call upon Our Lady. Just say this simple prayer, “Mary, mother of Jesus, please be a mother to me now.” I must admit, this prayer has never failed me." It will not fail you either. God Love You, Fr. Paul JMJ ***** Feliz Día de las Madres! Espero que todas las mamás de nuestra parroquia se sientan muy queridas hoy y que sus hijos las consientan mucho. Seamos sinceros, probablemente eso signifique que siguen haciendo la mayor parte del trabajo, ¡pero espero que al menos lo intenten! Me gustaría desearle un feliz Día de la Madre a mi cuñada, quien dio a luz a otra niña la semana pasada y me convirtió una vez más en el mejor tío del mundo. La pequeña Maia Evelyn Margaret Porter es hermosa y está sana. ¡Gracias a Dios! Jesús nos dice: «Nol os dejaré huérfanos», refiriéndose al Espíritu Santo que enviará sobre la Iglesia, pero creo que también alude al don de María como nuestra madre espiritual. Unos capítulos más adelante, Jesús dirá desde la Cruz a San Juan y a toda la Iglesia: «Aquí tienes a tu madre». La Madre Teresa dijo una vez: «Si alguna vez te sientes angustiado durante el día, invoca a la Virgen María. Simplemente reza esta sencilla oración: “María, madre de Jesús, sé mi madre ahora”. Happy Sunday, Saint Dominic’s mother had a dream of a dog with a torch in its mouth, running around the world and setting it on fire—houses, cities, and whole countries set ablaze. It was this image that inspired the Dominicans (“hounds of the Lord”) to go throughout the world preaching the Gospel and setting hearts on fire. Even as far away as Rome, Georgia, we were blessed to have Dominican sisters here for many years teaching at our little school. This week, we celebrated the feast day of one of the greatest Dominican saints, Catherine of Siena, whose most famous quote reflects the Dominican spirit: “Be who God meant you to be, and you will set the world on fire.” In a world where so many people struggle with their identity, it is good news that God simply wants you to be yourself—and the result will be a world set on fire. Paul JMJ ***** Feliz domingo, La madre de Santo Domingo soñó con un perro que llevaba una antorcha en la boca, corriendo por el mundo y prendiéndole fuego: casas, ciudades y países enteros ardían. Esta imagen inspiró a los dominicos («perros del Señor») a recorrer el mundo predicando el Evangelio y encendiendo los corazones. Incluso estando tan lejos como en Rome, Georgia, tuvimos la suerte de contar con hermanas dominicas que enseñaron en nuestra pequeña escuela durante muchos años. Esta semana celebramos la festividad de una de las santas dominicas más importantes, Catalina de Siena, cuya cita más famosa refleja el espíritu dominicano: “Sé quien Dios quiso que fueras, y prenderás fuego al mundo.” En un mundo donde tanta gente lucha con su identidad, es una buena noticia que Dios simplemente quiera que seas tú mismo, y el resultado será un mundo en llamas. Happy Sunday! As you may have heard, big changes are coming to the Archdiocese of Atlanta. The Archbishop has announced that we will be moving the ordinary age of Confirmation from 10th grade to 6th grade. This is great news and something that I have been praying for for many years. The logic behind this move is both theological and practical. Theologically, the Sacrament of Confirmation is intimately tied with the Sacrament of Baptism. The only reason the two are separated is that with the fast growth of Christianity, it became impossible for the bishop to be present at every baptism; therefore, they decided to allow priests to be the ordinary ministers of Baptism, and the bishop would try to be present at Confirmation. However, the ideal is seen at the Easter Vigil when the newly baptized are immediately anointed and confirmed with the holy Chrism oil. Practically, 6th graders are much more open to the faith than high schoolers. I can personally attest to this after working in Youth Ministry for the past 10 years. By the time they are in high school, as every mom knows, just getting them out of bed is difficult enough, let alone getting them to change their lives for Christ! We will be discussing in the next couple of weeks what these changes mean for families with 5th, 6th, 7th, 8th, and 9th graders. Please check the bulletin for updates and listen for announcements at Mass. This is a change that we have been preparing for over the last few years in Faith Formation, so we are ready, but we will need lots of prayers to get us there. I ask also for your patience with our Faith Formation Team as we try to navigate these changes together and for anyone interested in helping to step up! God Love You, Fr. Paul JMJ ***** ¡Feliz domingo!  Como habrán escuchado, grandes cambios se avecinan para la Arquidiócesis de Atlanta. El Arzobispo ha anunciado que estaremos cambiando la edad ordinaria de la Confirmación del 10.º grado al 6.º grado. Esta es una gran noticia y algo por lo que he estado orando durante muchos años. La lógica detrás de este cambio es tanto teológica como práctica. Teológicamente, el Sacramento de la Confirmación está íntimamente ligado con el Sacramento del Bautismo. La única razón por la que ambos están separados es que, con el rápido crecimiento del cristianismo, se volvió imposible que el obispo estuviera presente en cada bautismo; por lo tanto, decidieron permitir que los sacerdotes fueran los ministros ordinarios del Bautismo, y el obispo intentaría estar presente en la Confirmación. Sin embargo, el ideal se ve en la Vigilia Pascual, cuando los recién bautizados son inmediatamente ungidos y confirmados con el santo óleo del Crisma. En la práctica, los estudiantes de 6.º grado están mucho más abiertos a la fe que los estudiantes de preparatoria. Puedo dar fe personalmente de esto después de haber trabajado en el Ministerio Juvenil durante los últimos 10 años. Para cuando están en la secundaria, como toda mamá sabe, ¡ya es bastante difícil lograr que se levanten de la cama, y mucho más lograr que cambien sus vidas por Cristo! Durante las próximas semanas estaremos hablando sobre lo que estos cambios significan para las familias con hijos en 5.º, 6.º, 7.º, 8.º y 9.º grado. Por favor, revisen el boletín para recibir actualizaciones y escuchen los anuncios en la Misa. Este es un cambio para el que nos hemos estado preparando durante los últimos años en Formación en la Fe, así que estamos listos, pero necesitaremos muchas oraciones para lograrlo. También les pido paciencia con nuestro equipo de Formación en la Fe mientras tratamos de navegar estos cambios juntos, ¡y animo a cualquiera que esté interesado en ayudar a dar un paso al frente!
